MusicSheetSunday night… As I put on my comment here, I went to the Promise Piano Bar for its live music. Last time I went there was about a year ago - I wrote a post about this place after my visit. After reading the recent comments, I’ve decided to give it another chance.

In our lives, we seldom get a second chance. When we do, we try hard to seize it, and run with it. Well… at least I’d do that.

Tonight, TC and I came to this place @ International Gourmet Street (Silver Star Blvd./Steeles). I’m sure many of you have been to this area and eaten at those restaurants. There is one place you may have also been to, maybe you’ve been there for beers and dice games. But tonight, it was a totally different scene. No dice gaming, no hardcore drinker… just piano, violin, and cello. We arrived at around 10pm. There weren’t a lot of people, which is what I like. It’s hard to find a place where you can chill and enjoy some live music.

To be honest, I’d say the live band is still a bit green. There were a few NG’s, but that’s the beauty of it. If I demand perfection, I’d listen to a CD. When you can appreciate flaws, that implies you’re already at another stage.

I like the idea of having a few hours on Thursday and Sunday reserved for live music. It might sound a bit crazy - this “Promise piano bar” is like living a double life. On some nights you see dice games and lots of beers - all loud and noisy. And then, tonight it all slowed down, with live music.

I guess… 卡夫卡 is right. It’s the demographic, marketing and music. Afterall, business is still business - without the dices and beers, how are they gonna pay the bills?

I’m sure, given some time, some good music, those who like this will find their way in here. Hopefully, by that time, I’d be able to find a seat in there :p

Towards the end of the night, I requested a song - Carpenter’s Close to You - one of my favourite songs. The band needed to find the score to play another time. So, I requested the Karaoke version and sang it there. (Yah… Marz could be a bit impulsive sometimes.) I really enjoyed my night . Keep up the good work.

*Aside, I ordered a glass of house wine, my friend ordered an iced tea. After T&T, it was around $15. I think it’s pretty good value. BTW, if you would like to sing w. them, feel free to leave them a message, and they will find your song and do that with you.

Since the opening of the new Destiny Tea House/Restaurant in Richmond Hill, I’ve heard a lot about it. Apparently a lot of people checked it out. On the first 2-3 days of the opening I heard it took a long time to get a table.

Thinking about the evolution of bubble tea places, I gotta say it has come a long way. I guess it was around the early 1990’s when bubble tea first came into Toronto. (The grotto monster has commented on the brief history on my previous post.) Then, around the late-1990’s, more and more bubble tea places opened up in the GTA and Richmond Hill. Back in the old days, most of the bubble tea places were quite small in scale - most of them can only seat about 30 people. Those are the places where high school kids usually hangout at night. You know… have a good time, sit there and chat without spending a fortune.

Of course, there were tons of other BBT takeout places around the cities… Top of mind - Tea 168 and Ten Ren are the two major players. Location, location, location is the determining factor of the sucess of these little huts. There are many places you can get BBT, but the quality of the bubbles (tapiocas) can be very much different. I guess it really depends on the person who’s making/boiling the tapiocas. So, chances are you can get good ones and bad ones from the same store (if the quality control isn’t good).

Then, I think around early 2000, the largest bubble tea restaurant, Go4Tea, opened up in Thornhill (Commerce Valley). It stirred up the industry. Another place that’s similar to Go4Tea at that time was the Destiny’s teahouse in Scarborough (Silver Star Blvd.) - but I guess these two locations were quite far apart to have a huge impact on each other. Can’t remember exactly which opened up first…

About a few years after, Ten Ren opened up a new tea house nearby on Hwy7… and now Destiny finally joined the game in GTA north and opened up this flagship store.

Since it’s opened, I’ve been to Destiny a few times. Obviously, it’s a huge place. The design is quite cool. With different levels and styles of seats, it’s more interesting. The servers usually approach using English - although some of them weren’t that fluent, I still think it’s a good idea - no need to guess Mandarin/Cantonese. The design is modern compared to TenRen’s Tea Time and a bit similar to that of Go4Tea. The food selection is wider compared to Go4Tea. But for the taste of the food, I’d say Go4Tea’s better. That’s from what I’ve tried so far… especially the beef noodle - the one at Go4Tea is better. Price range is about the same.

So, here’s the summary from my own experience: (Comparison among the 3.)
TenRen’s = Best service, Chinese dimsum, (carries traditional and more professional) tea, but no magazine, wifi (was only available to those in VIP room - not too sure about now)
Go4Tea = Best food, with magazines (but a bit too dark inside for reading), wifi access
Dentiny = Best food selection, Newest, largest, with magazines (and good lighting), wifi access

Some people comment on the waitresses at Go4Tea and Destiny… to be honest, I found they’re about the same.

Here’re some snapshots that I took…

An overdue post for an overdue dinner. It’s been how long since we’ve worked together? I think… at least 5 years. Still remember the time I had to commute downtown. I actually liked taking the subway, coz I could get more reading done on the road. It was the “waiting up early in the morning” part that I didn’t quite like, especially during the winter. It just sucked!

So we’ve decided to try out this place. Mandalay, a pretty nice restaurant in Scarborough. We’ve done our research online and it seemed to have received pretty good reviews so far. At around 7:30pm on a Saturday night we arrived this place. Of course, SJ was on time (as always - actually SJ was a bit early that night.)

We parked near where the Staple is, then walked to the restaurant. From outside - if you are driving on Lawrence, you can’t really see the restaurant. So, I think those people who were there should have either been there or heard about it before. Chatted a bit about work and school while waiting for our table. The place was full. So full to a point that we had to wait a while for the table. Looking at other people dishes - very appetizing.

Finally we were seated at one of the table on the left. On the right side, there were two long tables lined up - later we found out that was actually a huge party for someone’s birthday. The atmosphere was pretty good in there. Quite cozy I’d say. Looking at the menu, I think one could imagine… a restaurant called Mandalay - there must be some kind of fusion/combination of the east and the west. There you go. The menu was quite interesting, from pad thai to pasta, you want it, you get it. Price was pretty good as well.

For appetizers, SJ ordered the Smoked Salmon & Goat Cheese Wonton w. mango salsa. I liked this dish. I would have ordered this dish as well… but I felt like something lighter that night. This dish reminds me of the cheese wontons that I used to have at a Japanese restaurant. It was pretty good. Putting both cheese wonton and smoked salmon in my mouth… yum.
Mandalay 3

For myself, I ordered the House Salad - mixed greens, soya beans, roasted red pepper, herb goat cheese w. balsamic vinegarette. I mixed the herb goat cheese with the veggie. Found the vinegarette a bit too strong. Overall it was ok.
Mandalay 4

In order to create a sense of privacy, we had this decorative light separating us from the table beside. It was quite a busy night for them I could tell. The service was ok, nothing to complain about.
Mandalay 5

So, SJ ordered Salmon Filo - baked in filo pastry, served w. a saffron cream sauce - I tried a bit and the fish was just right. Not over cooked. But I know I probably can’t judge the dish by one bite. SJ, you’re welcome to comment on your dishes.
Mandalay 6

My Seafood Platter - mussels, shrimp, scallop, squid and fish broiled with garlic and fresh herbs - was HUGE! I didn’t expect that much. There were quite a lot of fish in there… plus a bit of pasta underneath everything. Oh my god. I tried but I just couldn’t finish it all. Taste-wise, I found it so-so. Couldn’t pin-point what could be better… it seems to have missed something. Kinda bland.
Mandalay 7

We were the last table of the night. Again. Just like most of my dining experience with friends. Well, another thing is this place closed at 10pm which is a bit early. But we had a good chat! It’s good to catch up with friend after all these years.
Mandalay 8

Other comments… I think overall the dishes were alright, but there was no spark. I think the food could be better. We didn’t order any dessert since we were quite full by the time we finished. I saw a lot of good comments online - not sure if it’s because they ordered different dishes. But yah, if you’ve tried it, let me know what you think.

Saturday noon time, 2 cars left Toronto.
The first destination was Niagara-on-the-Lake.

(I)
The first winery that we chose was Pillitteri Estates Winery. Due to technical difficulty, we set Niagara-on-the-Lake downtown as destination. But we were very lucky since this winery was just on the way. Got out of the car after about an hour drive. The drive didn’t seem long since we had been chatting. The weather was good.

So here we are… we bought the Ice Wine Discovery Pass ($30) for a maximum of 5 winery visits (with food pairing with the wine tasting). It was a good deal - since each of them cost about $10 if you don’t have a Discovery Pass. We tried out some table wine downstairs at the front.

Then, we went to the area on the 2nd floor and started our first round of tasting. First we had the 2006 Vidal with piece of pineapple, blue cheese, apricot and date. I’d say the blue cheese and pineapple go very well with the ice wine. I’m not really a wine drinker, but these two years I’ve been drinking more and more. It’s always good to learn to appreciate wine. The 2nd pairing was a 2004 Cabernet Franc and chocolate coated almond biscotti. I like the 1st pair better while some friends like the 2nd pair.

Feeling good - finally we can relax a bit and forget everything that happened or were happening back in Toronto. Some ppl bought some wine from there… while browsing the collection, I saw this “Too Easy” from Australia. Interesting… wonder how it taste like.

After the first stop, we quickly moved on to the 2nd stop - Jackson-Triggs. While deciding the destinations, Jackson-Triggs and Inniskillin were the two that most of us agreed that we should visit. Its building was considered quite grand and modern compared to the other ones that we’ve visited. First thing we saw when we went in was this - biscuits, chocolate and marshmallow on the table. A staff was roasting the marshmallow and putting them together. We just stood there and took pictures (didn’t get offered though :p).

Then, we went in the room and tasted the table wine first… I tried a red one and I found it so-so.

I’ve also tried a few other ice wines - Gewürztraminer and the Vidal. The featured ice wine there was the Cabernet Franc. Again. But I like it. We had that with the savory (blue cheese + tomato sauce on toast) and then with the chocolate truffle. I still find the “ice wine + chocolate” too sweet.

OK, the last stop of the first day - the Peller Estates. We were there around 4pm, and then we found out that they have a wine tour ($5) at 4:30pm. With our Discovery Pass, we have to pay $5 extra for the ice wine tasting since they offer 3 different types of ice wine, hot chocolate and marshmallow. So we thought, why not?

The ice wine tasting was held outdoor!!! Very cold. But for some reasons, the ice wine seems to taste even better in cold weather. After the three wines - Riesling, Oak Aged and Cabernet Franc, we had the hot chocolate and marshmallow…

Standing closer to the fire… Smoke gets in my eyes (-.-)

Then we went on the wine tour… The gentleman gave us a quick history of the estate, how they make their wine, as well as how to taste the wine (red/white/ice). It was worth getting the tour.

(IV)
The next day, we went to the Château des Charmes. It was a huge mansion.
Niagara Ice Wine Festival - Chateau 1

Here are the three ice wine that they mixed - with the recipes:
1. Appletini =
1 oz Vidal Ice wine + 1 oz Sour Puss Apple + 1 oz Smirnoff Apple Vodka
2. Apricot Icicle =
1 oz Vidal Ice-wine + 1 oz Apricot Brandy + 1 oz Absolut Vodka
3. Raspberry Freeze =
1 oz Vidal Ice wine + 1 oz Sour Puss Raspberry + 1 oz Absolut Raspberry Vodka

I think it’s a good idea to have something different. But personally, I still prefer the ice wine to this mix.

The last stop - Inniskillin - one of Canada’s first estate wineries. It was my first time visiting this place. From outside, it has a humble look. There were some “grapes” outside for display. I like that. It seems that there are some renovations going on, but I wasn’t too sure and it was too cold to walk around and check. :o

RL mentioned about its ceiling. From this picture, it just looks like the floor and ceiling is switched. Hardwood ceiling - nice. So here’s what we have - Parmesan Fondue with bread stick paired with Oak Aged Vidal, and Dark Chocolate Cranberry Bark paired with Cabernet Franc Ice wine.
Niagara Ice Wine Festival - Inniskillin 1 Niagara Ice Wine Festival - Inniskillin 2

Oh it was heavenly. I love cheese! It’s just so… meaty. Don’t know how to describe that. Everything seems to be *just right*. Talking about that… now I’m craving again.

(VI)
After that, we started to head back. We also visited the Twenty Valley @ Jordan. There weren’t a lot of things to see/do. There were some wine & food tasting. There was the Cave Spring, some antique/gift shops and ice sculptures. *cold cold*

Good times.

Ethiopian House - it has been on my “To-Try list” forever. I think the first time I heard about this restaurant was from JK - when we worked together, sitting face to face. The good old days… It’s hard to find a co-worker whom you know you can rely on when needed. Finally, I tried this restaurant on the New Year’s Eve. I’d say it was a great experience.

Took some pictures of the inside. There are 7-8 tables on the first floor and some more on the second floor. For some reasons, I like the setting of the first floor better. Very exotic.

Menu is the same as the one they put on their website.
Ethiopian House 2

What we ordered? Greedy us… wanna try as many as possible - So we ordered the Bayaaynatu [i.e. "Of Each Kind" small servings of "Tibs", "Dry Tib", "Kitfo Special" with Gomen (collard greens) and aib (cottage cheese)] as well as the Vegetarian Bayaaynatu [i.e. "Of Each Kind" small servings of all 8 kinds of vegetarian dishs.]

This big plate came - meat on the left and veggie on the right. We was like… errr, are these for us two? We then confirmed with the server and he said yah. The food doesn’t look that much at first but eventually after we’ve eaten bit by bit, we felt so full!! @_@
Ethiopian House 5

You see, this is the Injera (Ethiopian bread) that came with the meat & veggie. They are folded like a large napkin (that’s what they said on their website, but I totally forgot about that and the first glance I REALLY thought they were napkins -_-)
Ethiopian House 6

But you know what? These spongy breads are really cool - they absorb all the meat and veggie sauce and oh you gotta try it. Before I came to this restaurant I’ve heard about the veggie dishes, and I would agree that their veggie (e.g. spicy split peas, chick peas in garlic, lentils, collard geens, potatoes, etc.) tastes better than the meat from the selection that we have chosen.
Ethiopian House 7

Finally, of course we won’t miss the wellknown coffee ceremony. It cost $12 per order and each order can serve up to 6 people. We ordered it and it came w/ the incense for relaxation. Special.
Ethiopian House 8

Another thing is, on their website they say many Ethiopian drink it with a pinch of salt or clarified butter. When we had the coffee they gave us popcorn which is = salt + butter. Smart. I liked the coffee.
Ethiopian House 9

My visit to the Ethiopian House was great. I’m glad that I could try it with RL and with the movie Kite Runner, the night was really special and foreign to us. Yah, good to do something different once in awhile.
