Fortune Barbecue Noodlehouse 粥家莊
中菜 (chinese), 飲食 (m-food) September 26th, 2006
Friday evening. Got off work at 6pm. (sweeeet! ya. I consider 6pm to be quite early) Walked around the surrounding Richmond Hill area, drove along Bayview and I saw this little plaza on my right hand side. That was the place TW mentioned - Bayview/Weldrick, where the Maxim’s is located. Felt a bit tired, looked up, and I saw the sky in grey. “I miss you!” Miss Marz told Mr. Summer. Since I was a bit early and it was my first time there, I walked around and checked out all the stores in the plaza. There was the Maxim’s, Scotia Bank (I think…), a Chinese fast food/take out place, a Chinese bakery, a clinic, a salon under new management, a pet-related store, etc… One place that caught my attention was a local supermarket, called Bruno’s Fine Foods. I have never seen this store, but the word “fine foods” seduced me. Couldn’t resist, so I went in and checked it out. One thing that I like about local/individual stores is that they usually carry some products that you seldom see in the big chain stores. The feeling of treasure hunting and exploration is indeed very satisfying. Later I found out that this Bruno’s is actually a family run business and there are 7 locations in total. Meats seem to be their area of expertise. You may wanna check it out next time you cook a meat dish.
Back to my original topic. Friday night @ 7pm, we came to this restaurant called Fortune Barbecue Noodlehouse 粥家莊. Looking at the green banner outside, for some reasons I think I’ve seen it somewhere before - Somewhere, but definitely not in this plaza.
However, the first few second I stepped into this restaurant, I found that it was quite different from what I expected it would be like - the decor, the layout, the fullhouse, the popularity of its BBQ. The tone was dark wood and ivory leather. The atmosphere was clean and modern.

Here are what we ordered:
中式牛柳 (Beef tenderloin with sweet and sour sauce) - If it was just me, usually I wouldn’t order the beef tenderloin since I’m not a heavy meat eater. Since we had two persons and TW suggested this dish, here it is. Had the first bite, it was quite good, very tender, slight sweet and sour unlike the usual orange-y sweet and sour sauce. (Well, I don’t think the dish is well described in English since “sweet and sour” could be quite misleading). Second bite, trying taste the 2nd layer flavour… As far as we could taste, they did not use any tenderizer such as baking soda (or very subtle) - they have hammered it instead. You know, a lot of Chinese restaurant like to “soften” the meat with tenderizers and the meat eventually loses the flavour. This beef tenderloin was good. It was a very good complement of white rice. YUMMM =p~~~

蒜香銀魚蒸茄子 (Steamed eggplant with silver fish and garlic) - Since we ordered a meat dish, I suggested a vegetable dish in order to be healthier while dining out. Just to be sure (you never know… there are people who hate eggplants), I asked if TW dislike eggplants, and his answer was NO. That’s great! A reason why I ordered this was that it was one of the few “non-greasy” eggplant dishes in a restaurant that I’ve seen. Eggplants and taro are always best cooked with lots of oil! Most of the time, if you are eating out, you see eggplants immerged in oil. This one… although it was steamed, the garlic and the little silver fish added enough flavour to it. I liked it.

At the end, before we got the bill, they gave us the orange. It was sweet!!! Very nice. Also took a picture of the condiment set. Cute. The bill came to be about $26 (after T&T), which was not bad at all! We ordered the two-dish combo ($17.99) came with a bowl of Cantonese soup, plus two bowls of white rice. The service was good overall. We were sitting at the corner, but from time to time the servers came by to see if we needed anything. I heard they also serve dim sum in the afternoon (not sure if it’s for weekends only).
Some other “insider info”… from what I heard, the owner of this restaurant also owns some other places that you may be familiar with, e.g. Yang’s Sushi Bar 大禾日本料理 (Hwy 7/Warden), Yang’s Teppanyaki & Sushi (Vaughan Mills), the Chinese BBQ place @ Evergreen plaza (Midland/McNicoll) - maybe that’s why they can leverage their Barbecue expertise in this new restaurant. I like the BBQ meats from Midland/McNicoll, gotta try it next time I’m @ Fortune Barbecue Noodlehouse. I also heard they have very nice Peking duck and Crab rice. Gotta check that out!

The colorful Pickle Barrel
西餐 (western), 飲食 (m-food) September 26th, 2006
Pickle Barrel… A restaurant that I’ve been to many times. Can’t even remember which location was the first one I visited. Barrel of Pickle - what an interesting name. The first few times I went, instead of “pickle”, I ordered their pastas and mussels, which were not bad, especially I found the mussels reasonable priced at that time. (Not too sure about that now.) Now, instead of the main course, I usually order their all day breakfast.
Was chatting with a friend the other day and talked about the ideal breakfast on a sunday morning. My answer was… something similar to the big breakfast from McDonald’s - should be nicer, but that’s the combination: English muffin with jam, scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, I can put them together as a sandwich or eat them separately. Also, a cup of apple juice please. What a nice Sunday morning… if I could lay in bed, feel the sun, listen to some songs (e.g. Cest si bon, Dans mon ile, or La vie en rose - J reminds me of that.) once in a while, it’s heaven. *Definitely need the sun… I don’t like gloomy mornings* Then, go out and walk around, or go workout. Nice.
Enough of my day-dreaming… I’m such a dreamer - not a thinker coz I don’t think I’m very logical (outside of work).
Last Friday afternoon, my colleagues and I went to the Pickle Barrel @ Markville. Just like a lot of the other smaller chain restaurants (I’m not talking about McDonald’s/KFC here), the look and feel of different locations vary. The one near Leslie/Cummer I believe is one of the earliest locations. You can see that one is frequented by a mature crowd - more elderly patrons. The food, I think is somehow tailored to their taste - very home-y, just like the one grandparents would make - usually cooked with more oil. This Markville location is “normal” - not too greasy. But when I compared the egg benedits here vs. the ones there, I could see a big difference - how they looked and how they were made. The bottom line is… they all taste good! So it’s ok.
This Markville location is modern and very mainstream… afterall it’s located inside a mall. The service was good. The food - I liked my egg benedicts - picture 4-5 (argh… maybe I was really hungry that day or… maybe I’ve been eating a lot lately *oh no!!!* I find this dish wasn’t filling enough.) The Miso Salmon Burger - last 2 pictures (Miso marinated Atlantic Salmon fillet grilled and served with a light wasabi mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion and crispy noodles on an egg sesame bun. Choice of fries or citrus and mixed nut couscous) was ok according to my colleagues. The taste was too light but the salmon fillet was huge! The other stuffs were average. You can tell it’s a fusion dish.
Originally, I didn’t plan to write about this place since I tend not to write about chain stores. However, when I look at the pictures, oh… they are just lovely and colorful. So, wanna share with you.

生活 (m-life) September 21st, 2006
There seems to be a lot of functions, dinners and gatherings lately. Don’t you think that’s always the case? The busier your are, the even more busier you will get. Of course, I always support functions with good causes.
One example is this charity fashion show, organized by plan e. It’s gonna be held on a Thursday night. I know most of us have to work on Friday, but let’s come out and have some fun!
Wanna know more about the show? visit www.plan-e.ca/threads2006

The Last Kiss
無題 (whatever) September 20th, 2006

Went to see this movie last weekend. Without much expectation, it turned out to be quite a good movie. Although some people may find there are too many lines of stories, I did like it. I was going to watch it at the TIFF, but when I knew that the movie was coming out soon… forget about the TIFF. I’m not gonna pay a premium to watch the same movie at the TIFF.
This year, I see/hear a lot of people or couples going through hurdles and bumps on the road - no matter how long their relationships are. Decisions are tough to make - just like the characters in this movie facing crossroads in their 29-30s.
The Last Kiss is a film for all those who have ever found themselves uncertain which path to choose.
TenRen’s Tea Time 喫茶新饌
其他 (other), 飲食 (m-food) September 20th, 2006
Those of you who live or work around Richmond Hill area should have already noticed the new TenRen’s Tea Time @ Times Avenue and Hwy 7 - closest intersection I believe is Bayview and Hwy7. Last time, we tried out the Chef Thai Fusion place, and the other night we came to this TenRen beside it.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by two ladies in traditional Chinese clothings (uniform). We asked for a table for 8, their answer was that we had to use the VIP room since there was no table that could fit 8 people. The minimum charge for the VIP room is $150. Since we all ate before we went, there was no way that we could spend $150 dollars just on drinks (although the girl said it would work out to be about the same amount if each of us order some drinks… well… that meant on average, each person would have to spend like $18.75 on DRINKS?!) So… we decided to separate into 2 tables of 4. It was ok. When seated, we were given some really nice menus. Instead of plain texts, you get to see a lot of pictures and combos… see below. With just a small twist, the menu became more appealing and appetite-stimulating. That’s the power of visual appeal.
What I find TenRen’s different from other bubble tea places is that…
There is no magazine (from my observation)
It looks like a modern teahouse with all sorts of chinese style dim sum AND dim sum/meal combos. Also, the crowd may be a bit more mature.
The decoration is more traditional with the bamboo color tone - when you go in, you see a section of the store selling all sorts of tea (dry tea leaves) on your right side. Somehow, this setting reminds me of the stores in mainland China.
Right after we ordered, we were told that there was a vacant table that could fit us all. “That’s great!” I thought. So we came to this table on the left by the window near the entrance. Luckily, we didn’t go to the VIP room. Since we weren’t that hungry, we only ordered a drink per person + two small dishes of desserts. The desserts were ok - nothing special to talk about. I ordered my favourite hot tea - 菊花八寶茶 (Direct translation - Eight-Treasure Chrysanthemum Tea). I think it was about $5.99, with refill of boiling water. Compared to the one at Go 4 Tea, this seems to be more economical.
Look at how nicely divided the dessert was… in the third picture - at the back.
For more pictures and review, you can go to BM’s blog. I just noticed that she’s also been there. Aren’t we all excited to try out new places! I might go there again this saturday to try out their food (but from what I’ve heard so far, the food there has been ok)
Rainy night… felt good to have a hot pot of tea and relax.
